ICOM’s Definition of a Museum

The ICOM’s definition of museum is an open, non-profit institution dedicated to acquiring, preserving, communicating, and exhibiting the tangible and intangible cultural heritage of humanity. The term includes live museums. The term is applied without limitation to the governing body, collections, and orientation. The committee’s findings suggest that many museums are ready for a major update. The process will begin in December 2020, and conclude by the beginning of May 2022.
