The ICOM Museum Definition Process
The European Union has an important mandate to promote museum education and public engagement. The term “museum” has many definitions and has become a catchphrase in the field. A museum is a place where people come together to share knowledge and experience. The UNESCO definition is one example, although the term may be too broad to cover all the different types of museums. But the meaning of the term is not simply limited to museums, as some other institutions include archives and research institutes.
A museum is a special place that houses objects and artifacts for research. Most museums are public, making them accessible to the public. While the largest museums are located in big cities, there are many smaller local museums throughout the world. The purpose of a museum is to educate the public, researchers, and artists. The ICOM definition aims to meet these objectives. It is essential that the institution be free of bias. A museum should be open to the public.
The ICOM museum definition process is based on the needs of its members. It will move to a new phase in 2022 and be submitted for approval at the ICOM General Conference in 2022. The process will be conducted in 4 rounds of consultation and is expected to take 18 months. The proposed timetable starts on December 10, 2020 and ends in early May of 2022. It may be revised based on circumstances. The next phase of the process is to determine whether it is appropriate for a particular museum.
In the first phase, the ICOM will seek to define the museum. After the consultation phase, the group will move to a new phase. A final version of the definition will be presented for vote at the next ICOM General Conference in 2022. There are 11 steps involved in the process. During this time, the ICOM will gather input from its members. They will use this report to inform the next steps in the process. You can also participate in the process by voting on the definition.

The ICOM has defined the role of a museum registrar. The registrar is responsible for documenting and safeguarding the museum’s collection. This person is responsible for maintaining and upholding the museum’s collections policy. Lastly, the registrar will be the primary record keeper for the collection. The registrar will help the public understand the mission of the collection and its origins. This person will work with the other ICOM staff to create exhibitions and exhibits.
