Whippany museum

There is no doubt that the Whippany museum offers a unique experience for its visitors. It is an interesting location that teaches the history of New Jersey and the town. It is also a fun place to visit for the entire family. It features a number of different exhibits and even has an operational train model. All of the ticket money that is collected goes back into restoring and upgrading the facility.

The museum is located in the town of Hanover, Morris County, New Jersey, United States. It is the home to one of the largest collections of American-built standard gauge steam locomotives displayed in New Jersey. The museum also has a 1904 freight house with its outstanding collection of rail and transportation artifacts. There is also a classic wooden water tank and dozens of historic railcars on display.

The exhibits at the Whippany museum are well organized and clearly tell the story of the development of railway systems in America. Unlike some other museums that put dishes, lanterns and tickets all on the same shelf, this museum takes pride in arranging its displays more as a progression of how railways developed from coal, to steam, to electric. There are a few notable pieces on display including Southern Railroad steam locomotive No. 385; Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad passenger coach No. 103, christened by Phoebe Snow; and Pennsylvania Railroad N6b cabin car No. 981590.

Guests can also see the restored, 1904 freight house with its outstanding collection of railroad and transportation artifacts and memorabilia. There is a classic wooden water tank, dozens of historic railcars and locomotives on display. The museum is also the home to one of the oldest locomotives in existence, the former Southern Railroad No. 385.

The staff at the museum is very friendly and knowledgeable. The docents are especially helpful and can answer questions about the various exhibits. In addition, they are able to offer suggestions on restaurants, shops and other things to do in the area.

The museum is open every Sunday from April through October from 12-4 PM. The admission cost is $2 for adults and $1 for children. The cost of the ticket includes entrance to the museum site, building and rolling stock collection. The Whippany Museum is a wonderful place to visit with the family during your stay at the Sonesta Select Whippany Hanover. It is a short drive from Newark Liberty International Airport.
