Whippany Train Museum

The Whippany Railway Museum (1 Railroad Plaza, Route 10 in Whippany, NJ) is a must for any train lover. Visiting this museum is like walking into a time machine, stepping back in time to yesteryear. You will hear voices from long ago from those who once rode the trains stationed on the yards of track that surround this 1904 freight house building and museum.

A trip to the train museum is a fun way to spend a Sunday afternoon with your family. They offer a variety of events throughout the year and all of their ticket sales go directly to the preservation and restoration of the historic train cars in their collection.

During our visit, we were given a very detailed tour by one of their volunteers. He was able to explain the history of each car in the museum as well as the process that they are currently going through to restore them. He was extremely knowledgeable and gave us a great experience while we were there.

The trains are beautiful and they offer a great way for kids to see what it was like to ride on a train. They also have a large interactive model train that kids love. It has buttons all around the model for children to push. This will turn on aspects of the model or raise and lower train crossing bridges. It was so much fun for my kids to play with this model.

They have a very large display of old signs and train memorabilia as well. This is a great place to see and learn about the history of trains in New Jersey and the United States. The staff and volunteers are very helpful and friendly. They answered all of our questions with ease and made it a very enjoyable experience for my whole family.

We will definitely be returning to the train museum and are recommending it to anyone that loves trains. They have so many different events throughout the year that are a lot of fun for the entire family. Make sure to check their website for updates on upcoming events and specials.

I would also like to give a huge thanks to the staff and volunteers at the museum for making this such a great experience. We went during Covid and there were mask restrictions but it didn’t affect the museum or the rides in any way. They even had a ice cream truck for National Ice Cream Month.
