Whippany Train

The Whippany Railway Museum, located in Hanover Township in Morris County, is both a railway museum and an excursion train ride destination. Its unique combination of historic railcars and railroad exhibits provides a comprehensive look at New Jersey’s rich railroad history, while its trains provide visitors with a relaxing and scenic way to enjoy time spent with family.

It is the largest collection of American-built, standard gauge steam locomotives displayed in one place in New Jersey, and features a variety of other historic rail cars. Visitors can also view two operating model train layouts, an indoor and outdoor, as well as other historic railroad and train exhibits.

Founded in 1965, the Museum was the first of its kind when it opened alongside the Morris County Central Railroad, a steam-powered excursion railroad for tourists. It was built by a group of employees who banded together to form the Morris County Central Railroad Museum and began displaying their collection in half of the freight house adjacent to the stone passenger station. Threatened with demolition, the museum raised funds to move the freight house across four tracks to its present location.

The Whippany Railway Museum is a non-profit, all volunteer organization that depends on the public for its continued support. It has grown in size and scope over the years, and now features a remarkable selection of railroad cars and historic locomotives. Among the Museum’s most distinctive attractions is a large, fully furnished caboose, which enables guests to step back in time and experience what it was like for railroad workers to travel daily for over 130 years when virtually every freight train in North America was trailed by a caboose.

One of the most popular events at the Whippany Railway Museum is The Polar Express, a live production that takes place aboard a slow-moving train, and includes a lot of onboard interaction and singing and dancing. The show is narrated by the famous radio and television announcer, Peter Marshall, and is accompanied by a live orchestra. Tickets for this show sell out quickly, and are available for purchase online.

In addition to the live music and onboard entertainment, guests will be treated to a delicious hot cocoa reception. The ticket price also includes a collectible THE POLAR EXPRESS(tm) ceramic mug.

Each December, the Whippany Railway Museum welcomes passengers aboard its Polar Express train for a magical journey into a storybook land. This special event features a full range of onboard activities, such as caroling and onboard entertainment by the cast of characters, as well as a visit from Santa Claus himself! First Class passengers will also receive a souvenir, silver sleigh bell. Children ages three and under are free. This is a great way to spend the day with your children and create lasting memories.
