Whippany Actuation Systems Uses Collaborative Robotics to Increase Production Capacity

Whippany Actuation Systems is a privately held company headquartered in Hanover, NJ. It manufactures motion-control subsystems for civil and military aerospace applications. Its products include control electronics, motors and high-power mechanical transmissions.

Compared to hydraulic and pneumatic actuators, electromechanical aerospace actuation systems are more precise, consume less energy, require fewer components for operation, and are easier to maintain over the system’s life cycle. As such, they are ideal for high-precision, rugged applications in aerospace and defense.

When demand for their specialized actuation systems increased, the New Jersey manufacturer looked at purchasing a new CNC machine or outsourcing production. But they wanted to stay in-house and avoid sinking a large investment into a new machine, so they started looking for an alternative.

They found a solution with the Universal Robots collaborative robot, which can be trained to tend their CNC machine in the same way a human would. This allows the company to run two additional, unattended shifts, and has significantly increased production capacity. In fact, they expect to see ROI on the robot in just one year.

Whippany Actuation Systems is firmly committed to equal employment opportunity and compliance with all federal, state and local laws prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sex (including pregnancy, childbirth or breastfeeding), age, color, creed, disability, genetic information, gender identity, marital or domestic partner status, national origin or ancestry, religion, sexual orientation or sincerely held religious beliefs and observances.
