For train lovers of all ages, the Whippany train is an excellent way to spend a Sunday afternoon. This all volunteer, non-profit operating heritage railroad offers a large assortment of restored historic rail cars and is home to one of the largest operating model train layouts in New Jersey. Children especially love hopping aboard the museum’s excursion trains as they wind their way through Morris and Essex Counties along the scenic Whippanong Trail.

Located at 1 Railroad Plaza in Whippany, NJ, the Museum has plenty to see and do. Learn about the history of New Jersey’s railroad industry as you walk through the museum’s 1904 freight house or marvel at a variety of historical railcars, including one of the oldest steam locomotives in America, Southern Railway No. 385. Step into the cab of this 120-ton, 112-year old fire-breathing iron horse and feel what it was like to be in total command of the powerful steam engine.

In the adjacent museum building, view a vast collection of railroad artifacts from around the world and explore exhibits that highlight the many aspects of the railroad industry, including railroad equipment, photos, memorabilia, and artwork. This unique museum is also home to one of the largest O-Gauge model train layouts found in New Jersey – a 30-foot-long railroad that’s often a favorite with kids.

As a not-for-profit organization, the Museum depends on donations and support from its visitors to keep its doors open. Excursion train rides are a great way to get involved and help the Museum continue its mission to preserve New Jersey’s railroad heritage.

Every year on the weekends leading up to Easter, the Whippany train hosts a special visit from the Easter Bunny. Children and adults alike will enjoy riding this colorful train and having their picture taken with the bunny. For an extra treat, the train is also available to rent for private parties.

A variety of other events are held throughout the year at the Whippany train. These include the annual Labor Day Weekend BBQ, an ice cream social and a Christmas in the Country event. For details on upcoming events, please visit the Museum’s website.

The museum is open for visitors on Sundays from April through October from 12-4 PM. The museum is closed during the winter months. The museum also has a snack depot, gift shop and full restroom facilities. Admission is $1.00 for adults and $.50 for children ages 3 and under.
